Meet the Greek goddess Artemis and find out how she can inspire you to be your authentic self. Because the ancient Greek goddesses were intelligent, powerful, and self-assured. But they were also women experiencing the world just like you and me.

The Greek gods and goddesses were central to everyday life in ancient Greece. However, there is still a lot that we can learn from them today. And embodying their wisdom can help us to step into our fullest power.

In this blog post, I am going to focus on the Greek goddess Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and how she can inspire us to live our truth with absolute authenticity.

The Greek gods and goddesses

The ancient Greeks believed in many different deities. People know the main and most well-known Greek gods and goddesses as the Gods of Olympus. These are the gods who lived on top of Mount Olympus. They are Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Hades, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Athena, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, and Ares.

However, even though these are the main gods, the total number of Greek gods and goddesses is huge. The ancient Greek people attributed all natural phenomena to the gods. This meant that they could find them everywhere.

These gods and goddesses were at the center of the ancient Greek religion and defined the lives of the people.

If you want to learn more about the Greek gods and goddesses, both the major and minor ones and their complicated histories you can check out this blog post.

Who was the Greek goddess Artemis?

Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt. She is the daughter of Zeus, god of sky and thunder, and Leto, a Titan and the goddess of motherhood, childbirth, and modesty. Her twin brother is Apollo.

Goddess Artemis

She is a young, beautiful, and vigorous huntress often shown with a bow and arrow. Artemis spends her time in the woods, accompanied by nymphs or hunting animals. She is the goddess of wildlife and patroness of hunters. Further, she is associated with forests, the moon, and wild animals, especially young ones, like the deer.

In Greek mythology, women were usually portrayed as devious, promiscuous, and disloyal. The goddess Artemis is in contrast to that as she was primarily portrayed as a virgin huntress, and she guarded her virginity carefully.

However, she didn’t just protect her virginity, she also protected the innocence of her followers and those sworn into vows of chastity like her priestesses.

She was an important goddess in the lives of women, especially when it came to marriage and young girls. Goddess Artemis was also the primary goddess of childbirth and midwifery and she helped relieve women during labor.

Also, she helped young women with the transition from maidenhood to becoming a wife and mother. You can find out more about the wild woman archetype in the blog post I wrote about it here.

How can Artemis inspire you?

The Greek goddess Artemis is known for her unwavering commitment to her principles and the lengths she would go to defend her honor and the purity of her followers.

Although she was expected to marry young, she vowed to keep her maidenhood forever. A decision that may have led to her being cast out of society. She did not, however, fear this. She wanted to live her truth.

Goddess Artemis

In the mythology of Ancient Greece, she would empower women to make their own decisions, and she can do the same for you. Artemis’s decision to stay true to her beliefs, even in the face of hardship, is truly inspirational.

Artemis was a divine goddess, but she was also a woman who knew what she wanted from life and went after it no matter if others agreed with her decisions or not.

With her iconic bow and arrow, Artemis stands ready to unapologetically claim what she wants and needs and is practiced in the art of focusing her energy with precision in the direction of her goals.
